Nuclear structure studies via neutron interactions. Progress report, July 1, 1981-June 30, 1982

Description

Neutron total cross sections in an 187Os sample have been analyzed to 500 eV to determine the parameters of the R-matrix formulation using a code based upon Bayes' theorem. Parameters have been obtained for 163 resonances, eighty-six of which have been attributed to 187Os. The remainder are due to neutron absorption by 186187188189190192Os. Utilizing the available spin assignments for resonance in 187Os we have determined, up to an energy of 140 eV, the J-dependence of the neutron strength function, S0/sub Jl/, and level spacing, , obtaining S000=(10.0 +- 5.2) x 10-4 and = 9.9 +- 1.7 eV for the case J=0, l=0, and S100=(2.4 +- 1.2) x 10-4 and = 5.3 +- 0.6 eV for the case J=1, l=0, respectively. Peak identification and input parameter file preparation has been accomplished for 186Os and 188Os up to an energy of 500 eV. Transmission measurements upon an enriched sample of 122Sn have been completed and processed for analysis. Preliminary analysis of 124Sn has been carried out in connection with initialization of the code MULTI on the MTSU computer. All necessary elements are in place and functioning for the routine multi-level analysis of total neutron cross sections
