Radiation exposure to radiological personnel during X-ray examination of the gastrointestinal tract

Description
In a comprehensive study the radiation exposure to radiological personnel carrying out fluoroscopic examinations of the gastrointestinal tract was determined. The measurements were performed with LiF thermoluminescent dosemeters for the gonads, crystalline lenses, back and hands. Furthermore, screening times were registered. The values determined were processed by variance analysis. There were no significant differences neither for different screening times nor for the radiation doses per examination between the application of conventional fluoroscopic technique and imageconverter television technique. After classification in different groups of physicians significant differences could be demonstrated for different screening times but not for radiation doses. For colon contrast enemas the radiation dose is always significantly higher to assisting persons than to the physicians altogether. In both groups the dose to the hands is highest. The observance of radiation protection regulations is assessed considered sufficient. (author)
