Reuse of soil contaminated from a tyre fire

Description

A tyre fire at an industrial site in Melbourne resulted in the contamination of stockpiles of clay used in the manufacture of bricks. A 1 30A approval was obtained from EPA Victoria to undertake a trial to assess the viability of the use of the contaminated soil in the brick making process and to evaluate the potential impacts on the quality of the final product. The contaminants in the contaminated soil included metals and PAHs. The trial included testing of air emissions arising from the firing of the bricks and subsequent air dispersion modelling, and leaching of key contaminants from the final product including PFAS. The trial blended contaminated soil with raw clay material on the site for use within the brick making process. (author)
