The author is an expert in nuclear medicine and with this book intends to illustrate for the general reader the hazards and the potentials of radioactivity. The book first presents the fundamentals of atomic physics and radiobiology and explains the terminology and concepts used in the discussions about radiation exposure and effects, and puts them into the overall context. The following chapters discuss natural radioactivity and its effects and the nuclear energy technology together with the safety engineering aspects, as well as the medical applications of ionizing radiation, and nuclear energy as a weapon. 'How dangerous is low-dose irradiation' is a main topic dealt with in detail. The material is presented on a sound scientific basis, taking into account the latest developments and knowledge available, so that the reader will be able to form his own opinion on the risks of ionizing radiation. Abstract (German)
Der Autor ist Nuklearmediziner und will allgemeinverstaendlich eine Bestandsaufnahme von Risiken und Chancen der Radioaktivitaet geben. Der Leser erfaehrt in diesem Buch zunaechst das Notwendige ueber Atomphysik und Strahlenbiologie. Begriffe, wie sie in der Diskussion ueber Strahlenbelastung immer wieder vorkommen, werden definiert und in ihrer Bedeutung fuer den Gesamtzusammenhang erklaert. Weiter geht es mit der Darstellung der natuerlichen Strahlenbelastung, der Kernenergie und ihrer Sicherheit, des Umgangs mit Strahlen in der Medizin und des kriegerischen Umgangs mit Atomen. 'Wie gefaehrlich ist Niedrigststrahlung' ist eine der zentralen Fragen. Die Darstellung bleibt wissenschaftlich fundiert, beruecksichtigt den neuesten Stand der Forschung. Der Leser soll durch die Lektuere befaehigt werden, sich selbst ein Urteil ueber das Risiko von Strahlenbelastungen zu bilden. (orig./HSCH)Additional details
