Facility for seed irradiation with fast neutrons in TRIGA-type reactors

Description

Proposals are made for a facility for seed irradiation with fast neutrons in TRIGA-type reactors based on measurements in the TRIGA-Mark II in Vienna and on the experience gained with a seed irradiation facility used since November 1966 in the ASTRA reactor in Seibersdorf. Three lead- and boron-shielded facilities of varying diameters and one uranium-shielded facility are proposed. A comparison of these facilities reveals that the uranium-shielded one has the best physical properties. It is smaller than the lead-shielded facility, provides better gamma shielding, reduces the thermal neutron flux without any additional absorption material and increases the fast-neutron dose. but the choice of type of facility has to be made individually at each TRIGA reactor station, depending upon the space available in the pool of the reactor and the funds available for the facility.
