Abstract A magnetic field exerting non-zero stresses is assumed to be present in a stellar atmosphere. The pressure and density gradients between the magnetic and the nonmagnetic regions needed to maintain equilibrium are calculated. It is found that the equilibrium configuration likely to be reached in the magnetic A and B stars is one in which the temperature in the magnetic region is higher than that in the surrounding nonmagnetic regions. The effects of line absorption on the light flux are also considered, and it is found that the main result of an increase in the line absorption should be a small increase in the flux in the V-band for the cooler magnetic stars. These combined effects are found to agree in general with the observations. The main discrepancies occur for stars with two magnetic spots of nearly equal strength. Some possible causes for these discrepancies are discussed.
