The Medicyc cyclotron as a temporary decelerator for LEAR
Description
This chapter describes a 50 MeV proton medical cyclotron mainly devoted to neutron production for cancer therapy. Topics covered include machine characteristics, deceleration and extraction of antiprotons, and performances (final energy E/SUB f/, emittances, intensities, time structure). The Medicyc cyclotron is designed to accelerate particles at discrete energies with a fixed frequency and by changing the magnetic field. Acceleration is obtained by two radiofrequency cavities forming two deltas in the magnet gap. Deceleration of a beam in the cyclotron and extraction, by a central inflector, along the magnet axis is investigated
