Extraction of iron(III) by tetraphenylmethylenediphosphine dioxide in order to separate it from americium(III)
Description
A study has been made of the extraction of Fe/sup (III)/ by solutions of tetraphenylmethylenediphosphine dioxide (TPMDPD) from HNO3 solutions. The effects of [HNO3], [NaNO3], [TPMDPD], and the nature of the solvent on the Fe/sup (III)/ extraction kinetics have been investigated. It was noted that a long time was required to establish equilibrium in the system; this time became shorter as [NO3-] was increased. Two different mechanisms were established for the extraction of Fe/sup (III)/, depending on [HNO3] and the composition of the compounds being extracted. The results have been compared with results on the extraction of Am/sup (III)/. It is shown that the separation factor for these elements in this system, with quantitative recovery of americium, is no greater than approx.103
