Two cases of spinocerebellar degeneration showing atrophic changes in CT scan
- 1. Nissei Hospital, Osaka (Japan)
Description
Two cases of sporadic spinocerebellar degeneration are considered. In both cases, clinical features were most indicative of olivo-ponto-cerebellar atrophy (OPCA), although late cortical cerebellar atrophy (LCCA) could not be entirely denied. In both cases, CT scan demonstrated cerebellar hemispheral and vermal atrophy. Atrophy of the pons was recognized in one case, but not in the other. Thus, CT findings in the former case were compatible with OPCA, but not in the latter. The CT scan might be helpful to diagnose and classify the degenerative diseases involving the posterior fossa structures. It is necessary, however, that CT findings should be compared with precise clinical findings and modified by post-mortem examinations. (author)
