Environmental factors influencing the failure properties of pressure vessel materials

  • 1. UKAEA

Description

This paper examines firstly the 'external' factors - corrosion fatigue and stress corrosion cracking - which influence crack development in pressure vessel materials. It then examines 'internal' factors - neutron irradiation, thermal and strain ageing - which influence toughness. Finally, some limited thought is given to possible synergistic effects between these processes and the directions for future research are indicated
