Chernobyl - after the fire

Description

After five years, the shadow cast by the Chernobyl disaster continues to grow longer and darker. Many conflicting estimates of the number of resultant deaths have been made -the official Soviet figure is still only 31, yet the former controller of the Chernobyl 30km exclusion zone has claimed that between 7,000 and 10,000 have died. The gulf between the official and unofficial is discussed in this article. (author)
