Estimation of systemic Pu burden based on DTPA-induced excretion data in feces

Description
Present methods for determining the systemic Pu burden of man accidentally exposed to Pu are based on measurements of long-term pattern of urinary Pu excretion. One problem with this method arises when treatment with DTPA is deemed necessary. A method for estimating systemic Pu burden using fecal Pu excretion data following early DTPA therapy is presented. This method was tested in experimental rats receiving 1 μCi/kg 239Pu(IV) nitrate, and treated with DTPA starting at 24 hr after Pu administration. The ratio of skeletal Pu content just prior to treatment to DTPA-induced fecal excretion of Pu was 1.3. In the rat, an estimate of systemic Pu content can be determined from the ratio mentioned above and liver Pu content. Application of this method to cases of human exposure is also discussed
