Effect of mitomycin C on the genetic regulatory mechanism in the salivary gland chromosomes of drosophila melanogaster

  • 1. Calcutta Univ. (India). Dept. of Zoology

Description

Observation on the functional morphology and puffing pattern of the X-chromosome and a standard autosome, 3L from polytene chromosomes of late third instar larvae of Drosophila melanogaster after mitomycin C treatment, shows there is a selective effect on the male-X, only. Analysis of the replication and transcription patterns after 3H-TdR and 3H-UR autoradiography has also been done. The data reveals that mitomycin C, a known DNA inhibitor, alters the normal metabolic activities of the male-X specifically, as a result of the disturbance in the normal nucleoprotein metabolism.
