Improving the performance of an arc driven shock tube

Description
It is well known that the speed of the shock wave produced in a bursting diaphragm shock tube can be increased by heating the driven gas. An electric arc affords a convenient heating method. However, the heating is observed to become relatively less effective as the electrical energy is increased. A method of overcoming this limitation and of improving the shock speed by about 50 per cent without increasing the electrical energy was developed. (author)
