Technological aspects of the veterinary radiotherapy service

  • 1. Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP), Botucatu, SP (Brazil)

Description

Veterinary radiotherapy represents an important specialty for the treatment of different oncological diseases in the most diverse species of animals. The use of ionizing radiation has shown efficient results in the therapy and control of these diseases. Several radiotherapy techniques can be used for excellence in veterinary treatment, such as: IMRT, VMAT, SBRT, IGRT and Radiosurgery, ensuring safety and effectiveness in veterinary treatment. The aim of this study was to present the technological aspects ofthe radiotherapy modalities applied in the field. Visitations were carried out in human radiotherapy sectors to better understand the operating routine and the therapeutic techniques used, in addition to analyzing the costs for the implementation and maintenance of a veterinary service. It was verified that it is possible to use the same irradiation equipment, such as the clinical linear accelerator, radiotherapy planning and management systems used in human radiotherapy. Variations are related to accessories: special tables for handling large animals, positioning and sedation accessories, temperature control and hygiene. The radiotherapy techniques used are similar to those used in human radiotherapy and the use of tomographic anatomical images contributes to greater benefit in planning and treatment. The more sophisticated the technology available in radiotherapy procedures, the more therapeutic benefits can be obtained; mainly considering the particularities of the veterinarian, such as anatomical varieties of the species, sedation during the session and voluntary non-cooperation. The level of technology employed is proportional to the cost of investment, maintenance and quality control instruments. (author)
