Fast chemical separations for the study of fission products
Description
Following the discovery of radioactivity, Marie Curie performed radiochemical separations and discovered two new elements, polonium and radium. Hahn's discovery of fission made available a large number of short-lived fission products. Nuclear chemists developed and are using fast chemical separations to study the characteristics of short-lived fission products. Types of fast chemical separations currently used are described, along with some examples. The chemical nature of products formed in a gas jet used for the study of short-lived bromine and iodine is also described. (author). 59 refs., 7 figs
