Measurement of the C/H ratio by neutrons

Description

A probe consisting of a Ra (α, n) Be neutron source and a boron-trifluoride-filled proportional counter were used for measuring the C/H ratio in hydrocarbons. The intensity of the thermal-neutron flux near the counter increases in proportion to the increase of the hydrogen concentration in the hydrocarbon surrounding the probe. The C/H ratio is found by measuring the density. The C/H ratio can be estimated as accurately by this method as by β-particle transmission. The errors resulting from the chemical nature of the hydrocarbon can be reduced to a minimum. The advantage of this method is that it renders possible an external measurement of the C/H ratio of hydrocarbons contained in steel vessels or thick steel piping by means of a portable apparatus. Abstract (French)

Une sonde constituee d'une source de neutrons Ra (α, n) Be et d'un compteur proportioimel a remplissage de trifluorure de bore a ete utilisee pour mesurer le rapport C/H dans les hydrocarbures. Le flux des neutrons thermiques au voisinage du detecteur est d'autant plus intense que la concentration en hydrogene de l'hydrocarbure qui entoure la sonde est plus elevee. Une mesure de densite permet d'en deduire le rapport C/H. On peut ainsi evaluer le rapport C/H avec une precision aussi bonne que celle que l'on obtient par transmission de rayons β. Les erreurs provenant de la nature chimique de l'hydrocarbure peuvent etre minimisees. Cette methode presente l'avantage de permettre la mesure du rapport C/H d'hydrocarbures contenus dans des recipients ou des canalisations epaisses en acier a l'aide d'un appareil exterieur transportable. Abstract (Spanish)

Los autores han empleado una sonda consistente en una fuente neutronica de Ra (αa, n) Be y un contador proporcional relleno con trifluoruro de boro para medir la razon C/H de los hidrocarburo. El flujo de neutrones termicos en las inmediaciones del detector es tanto mis intenso cuanto mas elevada es la concentracion en hidrogeno del hidrocarburo que rodea a la sonda. Por consiguiente, una medicion de densidad permite deducir la razon C/H. De este modo, se puede evaluar dicha razon con una precision analoga a la que se alcanza por transmision de rayos beta. Pueden reducirse a un minimo los errores derivados de la naturaleza quimica del hidrocarburo. Este metodo ofrece la ventaja de permitir, por medio de un aparato portatil, la medicion exterior de la razon C/H de hidrocarburos en recipientes o en tuberias de acero de paredes gruesas. (author)

Zond, sostoyashchij iz istochnika nejtronov Ra (α, n) Be i proportsional'nogo schetchika dlya zagruzki bornogo triflyurura byl ispol'zovan dlya izmereniya sootnosheniya C/H v uglevodorodakh. Potok teplonejtronov ryadom s detektorom usilivalsya s uvelicheniem kontsentratsii vodoroda v uglevodorode, kotoryj okruzhaet zond. Izmerenie plotnosti pozvolyaet sokratit' v nem sootnoshenie C/H. Takim obrazom mozhno opredelit' sootnoshenie C/H s takoj zhe khoroshej tochnost'yu, kak tochnost', kotoruyu poluchayut pri peredache β-luchej. Oshibki, proiskhodyashchie iz-za khimicheskogo kachestva uglevodoroda, mogut byt' svedeny do minimuma. EHtot metod imeet preimushchestvo v tom, chto on daet vozmozhnost' izmeryat' sootnoshenie C/H uglevodorodov, soderzhashchikhsya v stal'nykh sosudakh ili v plotnykh provodkakh pri pomoshchi naruzhnogo transportabel'nogo pribora.
