Description

Highlights: • We obtained data from 12 standard DHS conducted in ten countries. • Data were nationally representative and internationally comparable. • We assessed the link between household cooking fuel and BP in women aged 15-49 years. • Dirty fuel use was linked with raised BP and hypertension, mainly in rural women. • Using cleaner fuels may reduce hypertension related morbidity and mortality in L/MIC. Approximately three billion people are exposed to household air pollution (HAP) from solid fuel cookstoves. Studies from single settings have linked HAP with elevated blood pressure (BP), but no evidence exists from multi-country analyses.
