Engineering design study for a warm liquid calorimeter
Description
A systematic engineering study was conducted to quantitatively evaluate the feasibility of the Warm Liquid Calorimeter (WLC) concept for the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC). The baseline constraints were that each detector module could not exceed a weight of 20 tons, and that the main support structure plus detector modules could be assembled after the magnetic coil was emplaced. A systematic approach was developed that required a feedback loop that optimized the efficiency of the finite element structural analysis, assembly procedures, and hermeticity considerations. This approach is presented plus the results of the study
