Theoretical particle physics. Progress report, June 1, 1981-April 30, 1982
Description
In the past year the group has worked on a substantial number of problems in elementary particle theory. Possible patterns of symmetry breaking in the SO(10) grand-unified theory were examined, pion-nucleon scattering was analyzed to reveal the existence of many high-spin resonances, the quark model was applied with relativistic kinematics to the study of mesons, baryons, and glueballs, the strength of the quark-gluon coupling constant was estimated, and effects of wave-function mixing in baryons was calculated. On the more theoretical side, Monte Carlo calculations were done in lattice theories, including phi4 theories, gauge field theories, quantum gravity, and the Ising model
