Description

In the present paper the high temperature oxidation and sulfidation corrosion of binary TiAl and ternary Ti-49Al-2Ag and Ti-49Al-2Nb (at.%) intermetallic alloys was studied in SO2 atmosphere at temperature of 1173 K. Simultaneous oxidation and sulfidation of the above alloys followed the parabolic paralinear rate law depending on the time of reaction. In the case of Ti-49Al-2Ag alloy the oxidation kinetics was much faster in comparison with other alloy compositions, caused probably by an Al-Ag liquid phase formation. A significant influence of Ag and Nb additions in Ti-Al alloy on the microstructure and the chemical composition of the former sulfide scales and alloy surface layers was observed and discussed in terms of the corrosion behaviour during oxidation process in the atmosphere containing oxygen and sulphur.
