A return to local power stations

The concept of economies of scale is accepted without question in electricity supply. However, the trend towards larger steam turbine generators has been halted by electricity privatisation. Financial considerations, coupled with the availability of gas as a fuel, have promoted the construction of combined cycle gas turbines. This article challenges the accepted wisdom, suggests that economies of scale have progressed too far, and urges the renaissance of the local power station. (author)
