Uses of californium-252 in teaching radiochemistry

Creators

  • 1. Reading Univ. (UK). Dept. of Chemistry

Description

12μg 252Cf have been used to construct a neutron source yielding a uniform flux of about 105 n.cmsup(-2).ssup(-1) over a volume of 75 cm3 at a cost of about US $100. This source has been used to introduce undergraduates to practical work on neutron activation analysis, radioactive decay and saturation. It is routinely used to analyse inorganic compounds synthesized by students, and has many potential applications in studying prompt neutron reactions and in hot atom chemistry, which are being investigated.
