Description

After a short description of the radioactive compounds used in nuclear medicine and after reviewing the characteristics and operation of a radioisotope laboratory, the general principles of the nuclear medicine equipment and its quality control programs are given. The use of radioactive substances in the clinical diagnosis and in the treatment of endocrinological diseases is described in detail. The techniques for the labeling of leukocytes and red blood cells are given as well as the diagnostic procedures for the study of infections/inflammations. The use of radiopharmaceuticals in nephrourology and in the study of different bone diseases is summarized. The application of radioisotopes in hematology and cardiology is described as well as the use of radiopharmaceuticals in the study of the lymphatic, nervous and digestive systems. Some applications of radioactive compounds in radiotherapy are also reviewed
