Radiolysis, racemization and the origin of molecular asymmetry in the biosphere

An investigation has been undertaken to determine whether ionizing radiation might engender racemization of optically active amino acids, along with their usual radiolysis. As prototypes, crystalline D- and L-leucine, as well as aqueous solutions of their sodium salts were exposed to the radiation from a 3000 Ci 60Co γ-ray source. γ-ray doses which caused about 68% radiolysis of solid leucine left a residue which was about 5% racemized, while racemization proved even greater at lower doses for the dissolved sodium salts. In aqueous solution both percent degradation and percent racemization of the sodium salts were proportional to γ-ray dosage within the range employed (1-27 x 106 rads). Implications of these observations for the origin of molecular asymmetry by the β-decay parity violation mechanism are discussed. (orig.)

Die Untersuchung sollte feststellen, ob ionisierende Strahlung neben der ueblichen Radiolyse auch eine Racemisierung optisch aktiver Aminosaeuren bewirkt. Zu diesem Zweck wurden kristallines D- und L-Leucin und waessrige Loesungen ihrer Natriumsalze mit einer 3000 Ci 60Co-Gammaquelle bestrahlt. Gammadosen, die eine etwa 68%ige Radiolyse von festem Leucin bewirkten, hinterliessen einen zu ca. 5% racemisierten Rueckstand; der Racemisierungsgrad lag bei geloesten Natriumsalzen, die mit niedrigeren Dosen bestrahlt wurden, sogar noch hoeher. In waessriger Loesung war sowohl der Radiolyse- als auch der Racemisierungsgrad der Natriumsalze proportional der Gammadosis (1-27 x 106 rads). Die Implikationen dieser Beobachtungen fuer den Ursprung der molekularen Asymmetrie durch den Mechanismus der β-Zerfalls-Paritaetsverletzung werden diskutiert. (orig.)Additional details
