222Rn and its decay product concentrations in UK dwellings

  • 1. National Radiological Protection Board, Chilton (England)

Description

A survey of the 222Rn concentrations in a representative sample of more than 2,000 dwellings in the UK has been completed. The organization of this survey and its results are presented. The assumptions made to convert average 222Rn concentrations to annual effective dose equivalent to the occupiers of dwellings are discussed. The results of localized surveys, carried out where geological conditions indicated that elevated 222Rn concentrations might exist in indoor air, are also outlined. These surveys indicate that there are a small number of dwellings in the UK in which the annual effective dose equivalent to the occupiers may potentially exceed 50 mSv
