General dynamics' experience with large superconducting magnets and foreseeable future applications

Description
General Dynamics is the largest producer of large superconducting magnets for U.S. Government applications. The Energy Programs group of the Space Systems Division has won over 65% of the superconducting magnet application contracts awarded by the U.S. Department of Energy over the past 12 years. These applications include thermonuclear fusion, magnetohydrodynamics, isotope separation, and accelerator magnets. Overall, General Dynamics has built 29 large superconducting magnets with a total contract value of over $83 million. Potential near-term production of large-scale applications include superconducting magnets for the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) and the Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES). Potential far-term production programs may include thermonuclear fusion, magnetohydrodynamics, and possibly electromagnetic launch
