Alternate processing technology for liquid radwaste at ComEd stations
Description
With the uncertainties in both the availability and the cost of low-level waste disposal, ComEd elected to pursue the lowest cost technology that would achieve a significant volume reduction in solid waste requiring disposal. ComEd has initiated a program to implement an Alternate Processing Technology (APT) at several of their stations. This is a new liquid waste processing technology which will reduce the volumes of low-level waste generated. The APT promises to be more cost effective, less complex and easier to operate than other current technologies. The APT currently being implemented at Quad Cities, Byron and Braidwood, was developed by Vance ampersand Associates. The technology has been demonstrated on a bench-scale at all three of the stations and at this writing the pilot-scale testing is being conducted at Byron and Quad Cities. Following this testing, the next phase of the program is to purchase and install the new treatment equipment, which should be complete mid-summer of 1996. This paper describes some of the bench-scale test results used for the projections of the full-scale system performance
