Sulfur polymer cement, a solidification and stabilization agent for hazardous and radioactive wastes

Description

Hydraulic cements have been the primary radioactive waste stabilization agents in the United States for 50 years. This paper reports that Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) was funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to test and develop sulfur polymer cement (SPC) as an alternative or supplemental waste solidification and stabilization agent. SPC is also referred to as modified sulfur cement (MSC) in many pertinent reference documents. SPC and MSC both consist of 95 wt% sulfur, 2.5 wt% dicyclopentadiene, and 2.5 wt% oligomers of cyclopentadiene. any publication that refers to sulfur cement, sulfur concrete, or sulfur used as a cement or concrete, that do not contain the above components in the percentages cited, is a different substance and must be considered in its own rights. Elemental sulfur has been a valuable cement for thousands of years, but it lacked mechanical strength and it shrank too much to qualify as a modern-day cement
