Neutron irradiation effects on tensile properties of welded type 316 stainless steel

Description
The influence of heat treatments on the tensile properties of irradiated type 316 stainless steels which include weld deposits is reported. Radiation anneal hardening is observed in all specimens annealed at 473K after irradiation. This phenomenom is attributed to the migration of interstitial impurities, such as carbon and oxygen, due to radiation damage. Hardening was also observed in the ultimate tensile strength of cold worked specimens. Above 773K recovery effects are evident and the yield stress and ultimate tensile strength reach those of unirradiated specimens at various annealing temperatures. The elongation of the irradiated specimens at various annealing temperatures is shown. (U.K.)
