Description

We present here in detail the design of the future charge breeding system of the Système de Production d'Ions Radioactifs Accélérés en Ligne (SPIRAL) at GANIL, France. The charge breeder will be based on an optimization of an existing Phoenix ECR ion source which was formerly tested at ISOLDE, CERN. Compared to the previous prototype, the upgraded version shall include a number of modifications widely inspired from the latest results obtained with the Argonne National Laboratory CARIBU charge breeder. Those modifications are discussed here.
