Photochemical separation of rare earths in the liquid phase

Description

Mixtures of lanthanides have been separated photochemically using either the UV outputs from excimer lasers or the resonance lines from low pressure mercury lamps. Separation is accomplished in aqueous or alcoholic solution by precipitation following the photoreduction of Eu(III). Separation factors exceeding 1000 have been observed. Extension of this work to other lanthanides is also discussed
