Description
This research demonstrates that the usually weak electric quadrupole transitions can be clearly enhanced once the atom interacts at near resonance with a surface optical vortex. The design shown here is a type of bounded space based on atoms positioned near the evanescent twisted beam due to total internal reflection. The resulting optical quadrupole potential acting on the atom will be significant enough to be exploited. The situation forbids dipole transitions but allows quadrupole transitions, making them available to play a role. The research also shows that the surface optical vortex can distinctly affect the manipulation of absorbed atoms congregating in places of high intensity on the surface. (author)
