Nuclear and fundamental physics with spin polarized nuclei
Description
Capitalizing on the spin polarization induced by intermediate-energy projectile fragmentation reactions, the electromagnetic moments of nuclei in the region far from stability were studied. The results reveal a couple of interesting anomalies which have not been observed in the traditional region of nuclei. For further extention of the study, a new scheme of nuclear polarization to be applied to unstable nuclei by means of cross polarization from an optically polarized Xe solid is developed. The polarized Xe system is also found to be useful in the study of fundamental physics, and some experimental plans in this direction are discussed. (orig.)
