Description
Molten Salt Breeder Reactors (MSBR) are generation IV type reactors where the fissile and fertile isotopes are dissolved in molten salt system and circulated through the reactor core and the primary loop generating high energy steam with high thermal efficiency. These are inherently safe reactors having several added advantages such as: potential to achieve self-sustainability, higher safety, reliability, proliferation resistance and more economical. MSBR is the best option for thorium utilisation, as it is possible to produce 233U with a breeding ratio ~1 in thermal spectrum. For thorium utilisation, LiF-ThF4 (22.4 mole % of ThF4) with eutectic melting temperature 841 K is used as reference blanket salt material. To improve the properties of this binary 7LiF-ThF4 solvent, some additives like CaF2 can be added within certain concentration limits
