Diffusion processes in nuclear fuels

Creators

Description

A review is given of atomic diffusion processes in nuclear fuels. Emphasis is put on the oxides UO2 and (U, Pu)O2, the carbides UC and (U, Pu)C, and the nitrides UN and (U, Pu)N, but ThO2 and the metals uranium, plutonium and thorium are also treated to some extent. Self-diffusion, impurity diffusion, chemical diffusion and thermal diffusion are all discussed. For ceramic fuels, the effects of deviations from stoichiometry, of build-up of fission products during reactor irradiation and of enhancement of diffusion by radiation are dealt with. Finally, a short review on fission gas behaviour is given. (orig.)
