Study of cases of ipsilateral breast tumor recurrence following breast conserving surgery

Description
Study was made on the breast tumor recurrence pattern in 584 cases of breast conserving surgery performed between 1987 and 2002. Of these cases, resection stump positive cases accounted for 75 cases (12.7%) and breast irradiation was conducted on 370 cases (63.4%). The average follow-up period was 58.5 months and breast tumor recurrence was observed in 52 cases (8.9%) composed of 19 cases (36.5%) of ipsilateral breast tumor recurrence (IBTR), 3 cases (5.8%) of breast and other recurrence, 8 cases (15. 4%) of local recurrence, and 22 cases (42.3%) of distant metastasis. The 5-year survival rate of those without breast tumor recurrence was 95.7% and their 10-year survival rate was 94.0%. The 5-year survival rate following recurrence was 94.7% for IBTR, 70.0% for local recurrence, 52.5% for distant metastasis, and 100% for breast and other recurrence. Repeat breast conserving surgery was performed on approximately 2/3 of the 19 cases of IBTR. As the cause for the favorable prognosis is considered to be ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) or similar status for about six months, all possible efforts should be made for early detection of breast tumor recurrence following breast conserving surgery.
