Texture of low temperature isotropic pyrocarbons

Description

Isotropic pyrocarbon deposited on fuel particles was studied by transmission electron microscopy in order to determine its texture. The material consists of an agglomerate of spherical growth features similar to those of carbon black. The spherical growth features are formed from the cristallites of turbostratic carbon and the distribution gives an isotropic structure. Neutron irradiation modifies the morphology of the pyrocarbon. The spherical growth features are deformed and the coating becomes strongly anisotropic. The transformation leads to the rupture of the coating caused by strong irradiation doses

Abstract (French)

Le pyrocarbone isotrope depose sur les particules de combustible a ete etudie par microscopie electronique en transmission pour determiner sa texture. Il est forme d'un agglomerat de spheroides similaires a ceux du noir de carbone. Ces spheroides de carbone sont constitues de cristallites de carbone turbostratique et la distribution donne une structure isotrope. L'irradiation par les neutrons modifie la morphologie du pyrocarbone. Les spheroides sont deformes et le revetement devient fortement anisotrope. La transformation conduit a la rupture du revetement causee par les fortes doses d'irradiation
