Process for conditioning wastes made of radioactive metallic particulates such as dissolution residues of spent fuel elements

Description

Radioactive particulates are put in suspension in a liquid and the suspension evaporated by injection in a rotating heated horizontal tube. The tube contains a bed of alloy or metal powder, for instance copper or stainless steel. The dry mixture obtained after this heat treatment is melted at the temperature required for forming defined compounds between the metal of the powder and metallic constituants of radioactive particulates for instance spent fuel dissolution residues or dust from spent fuel cutting or mechanical decladding

Abstract (French)

On met les particules radioactives en suspension dans un liquide, puis on soumet la suspension a un traitement thermique d'evaporation realise en injectant cette suspension dans un tube sensiblement horizontal chauffe et entraine en rotation autour de son axe, qui contient un lit d'une poudre de metal ou d'alliage, par exemple de cuivre ou d'acier inoxydable; on soumet ensuite le melange sec de poudre et de particules metalliques radioactives obtenu apres ce traitement thermique a une fusion dans l'installation a une temperature suffisante pour fondre la poudre de metal ou d'alliage et former des composes definis entre le metal de la poudre et les constituants metalliques des particules radioactives
