A Helmholtz resonator of very low frequency for the very thin helium-II film

Description
A double Helmholtz resonator, used to study the onset phenomena in thin He-II films, is described. Film-liquid displacements to and from the end volumes are measured capacitively. At temperatures below onset free oscillations (with periods approx. equal to 1000 s) and third-sound propagation are investigated. Onset is clearly marked by the rapid decrease to zero of the maximum amplitude of oscillation that can be created. Above onset the diffusive mass transport of superfluid can be measured. (orig.)
