Future cost savings from engineering innovations

  • 1. Stone and Webster, Boston, MA (USA)

Description

Nuclear power plant design and operating experience in the 1970s and 1980s continues to provide feedback to the technology base. The lessons learned in these two decades, coupled with engineering innovation, will lead to improvements and cost-reductions in the plants of the 1990s. Two types of innovations related to piping are described: snubber reduction and pipe rupture elimination. A brief account of the industry experience is given for each, followed by an, account of the technical methodology involved. A discussion of expected benefits, including cost savings of millions of dollars (US), is provided
