Study on microstructure of Zr-1 wt % Nb alloy before and after hydriding

  • 1. Materials Science Div., Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai (India)

Description

The microstructure of Zr-1 Wt %Nb alloy has been characterized. In this alloy, the microstructure consists of β phase distributed as fine spherical precipitate within the α grain as well as along the grain boundaries. The β phase precipitate sizes were ranging from 20 to 80 nm. The alloy was hydrided by gaseous charging method to different hydrogen levels. The morphology and microstructure of hydrided samples were examined. Generally the hydrides were found to be transgranular. The hydride morphology and their volume fraction were observed to be sensitive to total hydrogen concentration in the alloy. The crystallographic details of hydrides such as orientation relationship and habit plane has been determined. (author)
