Description
New tools for studying elementary particle physics based on high-peak power lasers promising extremely high electric field generation are reviewed. An electric field exceeding 2.7 x 1014 V/m has been achieved via focusing a pulse laser, and 100 times higher field is accessible in a few years. Such high field interaction with matter exhibits new phenomena, which can be neglected or be impossible to detect in weak fields. We show that a relativistic flying mirror can even boost to higher intensities with modest laser energies. Laser based particle acceleration is explained reviewing the conceptual designs of TeV colliders and PeV acceleration. The laser parameters for TeV colliders require high peak power (10 PW) and high repetition rate (kHz). In addition to high luminosity applications such as colliders, we also show an example of low luminosity but an ultra high energy of the order of PeV. (author)
