Stator water cooling chemistry Sourcebook: Industry guidance and recent industry experience - T03-2-4

Description
Stator water cooling system (SWCS) issues such as plugging of filters and strainers, premature resin exhaustion, and fouling of stator bars have indicated a knowledge and implementation gap with SWCS chemistry control. Currently, technical basis and guidance for establishing excellent SWCS chemistry control are provided in a number of industry documents that are not well connected. Research efforts were commenced in 2018 to collect industry and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) guidance documents, industry operating experience, past Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) research, and technical literature into a single consolidated Sourcebook. Operating experience, knowledge gaps, and key research areas were identified by forming a focus group of SWCS chemists and engineers at fossil and nuclear power plants along with utility consultants. A Sourcebook was prepared to unite the technical foundation for a variety of chemistry control options for SWCS. In addition, the Sourcebook defines normal operating values and short-term action levels. The Sourcebook also summarizes troubleshooting responses to be considered if off-normal chemistry is experienced to minimize system interruptions or performance issues. This paper summarizes the Sourcebook development and relevant industry operating experience. (authors)
