Resonance ionization of Kr metastables using a single-frequency laser

  • 1. Pacific Northwest Lab., Richland, WA (USA)

Description

A continuous-wave single-frequency dye laser and an argon ion laser were used to do 1-photon resonant, 2-photon ionization of the metastable 1s3 and 1s5 states of krypton to measure isotope shifts and hyperfine splittings for six transitions. Using only the dye laser, we did 2-photon resonant, 3-photon ionization of the 1s5 metastable state of krypton via the 4d4' state. We predict resonance ionization with high isotopic selectivity is possible using this state, based on the measured isotope shifts and hyperfine splittings. (author)
