Description
Areas in the nuclear chart where neutron-induced and β--delayed fission are of importance are identified and methods to predict their values are discussed. Presently available theoretical fission barrier heights seem to over-estimate both processes, in comparison to experimental information. Therefore, a judgment of the extent to which they affect r-process calculations can only be preliminary. The authors expect that the influence on the chronometer ratios 232Th/238U and 235U/238U is small. Whether nuclei heavier than Z = 100 can be produced in the r-process can only be decided after calculations with improved mass formulas and fission barrier heights
