Description

Alfven waves, generated by streaming cosmic rays, may decay via a cascade of forward and backward waves, caused by an interaction with sound waves. The analysis of this process by Chin and Wentzel is extended, and limits are placed on the validity of various approximate solutions. In a later paper, these will be used to give self-consistent solutions to the cosmic ray diffusion problem. (author)
