Thermal plasmas are attracting increasing interest for processing of materials, including such applications as plasma spraying, plasma CVD, plasma melting, plasma extractive metallurgy, and plasma densification. In many of these applications, electric arcs are utilized for producing the required plasma. In this paper an overview on plasma generation is given with emphasis on high intensity arcs
