Phase α''-ω transition in titanium-niobium system alloys under pressure

  • 1. AN SSSR, Sverdlovsk (Russian Federation). Inst. Ehkologii Rastenij i Zhivotnykh

Description

In quenched Ti-Nb alloys containing 7,9,11,13 and 15 at.% Nb the pressure effect on phase transformations was investigated. Alloy specimens were subjected to quasihydrostatic pressure of 8 GPa for 1 h. It is shown that the pressure effect promotes α' -> ω phase transition in the alloy with 7 at.% Nb. In the alloys with 9-15 at.% Nb the transition of α'' -> ω takes place. The high pressure phase (ω-phase) id found to be retained in a metastable state once the pressure is relieved. The high pressure id formed as massive areas, it inherits the morphology of initial martensitic structure. 21 refs., 5 figs., 1 tab
