FASTBUS system. Status, problems and using prospects

A review of publications dealing with the development of a new high-speed dataway modualar electron system Fastbus which must change the CAMAC system is given. Basic structural elements of the Fastbus system and peculiarities of power supply cooling system, service, system and special modules composing it are considered. Peculiarities of software are discussed. The existing demonstration (SLAC, FNAL, UIUC) and test (BNL, Pilot project) Fastbus system are described. Projects of using these systems in experimental facilities of large charged-particle accelerators for instance in data acquisition system for detector of FNAL, p anti p colliding beams, detector of μ+ → e+e-e+ decay products SINDRUM and multiprocessor event selector VIRTUS are described as well. It is concluded that majority of problems related to the development of astbus system is solved already. Standard schemes of auxiliary logic unit are developed, relatively stabilized operation set of Fastbus is available. Wide application of the system is limited by its complexity and expensiveness
